Growing Demand for PET Procedures Should Help Market Prospects

Feb. 5, 2005

Bio-Tech Systems PET procedure volume increased 48% in 2003 reaching 650,000 procedures. By 2010, PET procedure volume should rise to 2.1 million procedures. New PET radiopharmaceuticals and better synergy with CT and MR should help to increase demand for PET.

Although the dominant focus of PET is still in oncology, cardiology applications have been growing in diagnosing myocardial viability and follow-up to equivocal SPECT studies. This has allowed cardiologists more flexibility in using PET to diagnose patients with poor myocardial performance. The expanded role of PET in cardiology has also been stimulated by the growth of PET-CT with multi-slice CT configurations suitable for cardiac imaging.

Based on the positive outlook for PET, Bio-Tech Systems estimates that procedure volume will grow at a compound rate of about 20% per year in 2005 and 2006 and should reach about 2 million procedures by 2010. This is a conservative estimate since the synergy of PET with other imaging and diagnostic modalities could contribute to more rapid growth. Further information is available in Bio-Tech Systems' Report 200, Market for PET Radiopharmaceuticals and PET Imaging. This report analyzes the driving forces behind the growth of PET and provides a rationale for forecasting future utilization of this modality.
