THE MARKET FOR PET RADIOPHARMACEUTICALS & PET IMAGING

BIO-TECH SYSTEMS INC. announces the publication of:
BIO-TECH Report #200,
The Market for PET Radiopharmaceuticals & PET Imaging

The PET Report Includes:
  • Present and Emerging Markets for PET Imaging
  • Analysis of Current and Future FDG Sales
  • U.S. and Worldwide Markets for PET Scanners
  • New Targeted Tracers and Molecular Probes for PET
  • Rapid Market Growth in Combined PET/CT Systems
  • Recent Upturn in International Sales
  • Technological Trends and Competitive Challenges
  • Market Assessment and Sales Forecasts to 2010
The report has a strong focus on new products and technology and emerging market opportunities. The overlap between PET and radiology, which was stimulated by the success of combined PET-CT systems, has allowed radiologists to promote the advantages of multi-modality imaging to both patients and investors in PET imaging facilities. As the availability of PET increases and its capabilities become more visible, it will encourage approval of additional indications in oncology as well as cardiology and neurology, which have a large patient base. The recent approval of PET for Alzheimer's disease is certain to stimulate procedure growth. New PET radiopharmaceuticals are also in the pipeline that will measure biochemical processes that show patient response to therapy. This will overcome some of the limitations of conventional FDG-PET and allow measurement of cellular response to therapy rather than metabolism. This will aid in treatment monitoring and therapy planning for breast cancer, prostate cancer, brain cancer, bone cancer, and other common cancers.

Growth of PET Procedure Volume and Sales of FDG
The demand for PET continued to grow in 2003 reaching 650,000 procedures, an increase of 48% for the year. Growth should continue with procedure volume increasing about 35% in 2004. By 2010, PET procedure volume should rise to 2.1 million procedures. Approval of indications such as breast imaging have added to procedure volume as well as expanded use of PET in lung cancer, colon cancer, lymphoma and melanoma. Although the dominant focus of PET was still in oncology, cardiology applications have grown in diagnosing myocardial viability and follow-up to equivocal SPECT studies. This has also been stimulated by the introduction of PET-CT with multi-slice configurations suitable for cardiac imaging. PET has become more accessible to a wider base of physicians and patients, increasing the referral base. This has stimulated sales of FDG, while reducing the cost per dose. FDG sales of $193.2 million in 2003 were up 14% from $169.4 million in 2002. These sales should reach $521.8 million by 2010, notwithstanding the diminishing price per dose for FDG. These estimates are conservative and are based on present utilization. It is likely that new indications, such as Alzheimer's, will, add further stimulus to the market for PET and FDG.

Sales Growth of PET Imaging Systems
In 2003, there were 295 PET scanners sold domestically and 450 scanners sold worldwide. US sales were $477.5 million and worldwide sales were $723.5 million. Domestic sales increased 18.6% from the previous year and worldwide sales increased 32.8%. This reflects a slowdown in PET orders in the US as users attempt to utilize existing capacity more efficiently. International sales have increased recently with growth rates higher than the US. This reflects growing awareness of PET and expanded reimbursement, particularly in Japan. Both US and international users have adopted PET-CT very rapidly. In 2003, PET-CT comprised 79% of total billings. This should increase to 91% in 2004. By 2010, domestic bookings will increase to 620 units with sales of $1,094 million. Worldwide bookings will reach 1,053 units and $1,969 million in sales volume. The proportion of international sales will continue to rise from 34% in 2003 to 45% or higher by 2010. In 2003, 24% of all PET scanners sales were mobiles, comprising $116.4 million in sales. This level of activity should continue, with mobile sales providing an important underpinning in the PET market.
